Normally in education circles general activity slows down in December leading to a relaxed holiday season. Not so this year. There are a lot of stories popping up, but there are also important updates to previous stories, such as the Project Kitty Hawk February report shared earlier this week. To help with our coverage, I am starting a shorter premium post type called Friday Follow Up to help us provide readers with important context for past newsletter posts. Put another way, this is browser tab management to help me not build up too much of a queue.

Middle States Doubles Down

In late October I described the actions of an accreditor to set policy that is closely aligned with the Department of Education’s (ED’s) third-party servicer (TPS) guidance from Spring 2023. As a reminder (and read that post for context, Middle States was a signatory to the same letter published by the American Council on Education calling out the harmful flaws in the federal TPS expansion. In fact, that letter was one of the leading causes of ED rescinding that guidance (but promising to fight another day).
